July 22, 2024 – Columbus, Ohio –
Columbus Soap Box Derby, Inc. is proud to announce that 2024 Rally Champion Delaney Nichols won 1st place in the International Soap Box Derby Rally Stock Division held this past weekend in Akron, Ohio. Nichols defeated 50 other rally champions from around the country, each of whom had collected rally wins to qualify for the Akron championships. She also won the award for fastest Stock division time of the day.
In qualifying for the annual championships, Delaney had 24 rally wins for the 2023/2024 season. “Delaney and her family were very dedicated racers this past year,” said Dan Kirk, Director of the Columbus Derby. “It’s a thrill to see their hard work pay off with a championship.”
Nichols will enter 7th grade at Larson Middle School in Grandview Heights. She is also involved in cheerleading, cross country, and is a three-time Soap Box Derby Superkids volunteer. Delaney’s career aspiration is in Marine Biology or Environmental Science. Delaney won the Columbus Area Championships Stock Division Championships in 2023 and continued competing in Stock on the rally circuit in 2024. “My mom competed in Soap Box Derby when she was my age,” said Nichols. “But with this win, I now have bragging rights in the family.”
Area rally races in the new 2024/2025 racing season occur in Lancaster, Ohio on August 11 at Lancaster’s historic Derby Downs and in Columbus on September 21st and 22nd at Big Run Park. Both the Lancaster and Columbus derby organizations provide loaner cars and mentors to help new families get started racing. Central and Southeast Ohio boys and girls ages 7-17 are encouraged to attend these events to learn how to get started racing.
