2022 Columbus Soap Box Derby Championships on May 14th

Celebrating the 77th Columbus Derby Championship.  Racing Begins at 9:00am

May 10, 2022 – Columbus, Ohio – Columbus Soap Box Derby, Inc. announced today details of its championship race scheduled for May 14th on Derby Hill in Big Run Park. 27 entries will compete in three divisions – Stock, Superstock, and Masters. Each division champion will represent the Columbus area in the All-American Championships on July 23rd in Akron.

“This is our 77th year of hosting a Columbus derby championship,” said Dan Kirk, Director of the Columbus Derby and 1988 champion. “Our timers measure races in one-thousands of a second. We’ll need that precision as our Stock division is particularly competitive this year. Every entry has a legitimate shot at winning.”

This year’s theme is “It’s A Gravity Thing” emphasizing derby as a unique gravity-based STEM sport. Pickerington High School Central Tiger Tech Club has eight entries – four in the Superstock division and four in the Masters division. “Soap Box Derby is incorporated into our technology curriculum”, said Mustafa Kalash, PHSC teacher and coach of the Tiger Tech Club. “This is the 7th year our students have competed in derby. My goal is that derby, robotics, and our other competitions inspire them to pursue technology-based careers.”

“Derby epitomizes great values that Masheter Ford holds dearly – STEM-based learning, family, and tradition”, said Bob Masheter, President, Dick Masheter Ford, Inc. “Masheter Ford is pleased to once again be the title sponsor for the Columbus Soap Box Derby. Good luck to all this year’s participants.”

This year’s field features seven past All-Americans, 13 rookies, and competitors from Columbus, Delaware, Dublin, Grandview, Grove City, Hilliard, Lewis Center, Mt. Gilead, Pataskala, Pickerington, Powell, Piqua, Westerville, and Worthington.

In addition to Masheter Ford, race and derby car sponsors this year include Roehrenbeck Electric, Loeb Electric, Pickerington City Schools, Hartzler Family Dairy, Evening Kiwanis of Delaware, Unity Community Center of Delaware, and Zach’s Truck Body & Paint.

Racing begins at 9:00am. Champions will be announced on Facebook and Instagram. Admission is free and the public is invited to cheer on the competitors. Racing occurs on Derby Hill in Big Run Park, 4201 Clime Road.
